Storyboards

Like many things, storyboards aren’t meant to be perfect. They are instead meant to provide a simple, general idea of what a shot will look like- with just enough detail to get it across to the viewer. A simple drawing style was chosen for these storyboards so that drawings could be pumped out quickly, leaving more time for revision and refinement. The storyboard went through several revisions; some scenes were added, some were slightly changed, and others were cut out entirely.

In the end, a clear story was made. The storyboards show a traveler making their way through several situations which would be tough for someone with food allergies on vacation: ordering food at a restaurant, and finding a snack at a grocery store. Once the team approved of the boards, it was time to move onto filming.

Filming

The filming of the commercial took place over two weeks: most of the video was filmed on the first week, while revised scenes were filmed on the second. The team met up in person to take the scenes drawn out in the storyboard and bring them to life as much as possible. The commercial was filmed on an iPhone 15, with audio recorded on a separate iPhone.

Before filming began, some changes were made from the storyboards not only in order to shorten the runtime, but also to provide a clearer story. Small scenes such as the traveler checking out an item in a store and walking into a restaurant were cut, while transitions that were to be added later such as an animated map to showcase the plane route of his vacation were added.

Filming inside of a food court proved tough- cutting out background noise and chatter proved to be a big task, as was making sure the shots were uninterrupted. Solutions were quickly found however, and using a separate phone as a microphone to record audio with proved to be the best solution to cut out as much background noise as possible before the editing process.

During revisions on the second week of filming, an entire scene was reshot, as the video required a location with as little English wording and signage as possible in order to pass it off as a foreign country.

Editing

Once filming was wrapped, the majority of the time spent on the commercial went to editing all of the footage together into a coherent and good-looking story. Many different elements all came together in order to create the final video: video footage, audio recordings, and animation were all included in the commercial. Editing mainly took place in Adobe Premiere Pro, with small changes to animation made in After Effects.
